A speech therapist helps with that?! By Caitlin Fattore

When we hear the term "Parkinson's Disease", we often associate thoughts of hallmark motor symptoms, neurologists, and the importance of physical exercise. Recently, there has been a push to educate regarding the importance of a speech pathologist. But why is there so much "chatter" around this discipline? In case you didn't catch our PD EDU in October of 2023, or need a refresher, let's dive into some benefits. One of the main principles of health care includes health literacy- we can't fix what we don't know. Voices for Parkinson’s Inc. also stands on that principle. One main reason to initiate contact with a speech pathologist is to gain knowledge regarding the disease process. Did you know Parkinson's Disease can affect your voice, speech, thinking process, reaction times, and how you chew and swallow food? A speech pathologist can help assess and educate regarding signs and symptoms, as well as gather baseline data so that changes can be recognized quicker. A second reason includes the importance of early intervention, which has been heavily researched. To keep it simple, being proactive vs reactive in disease management is key.

It matters that you see a speech pathologist for individual care and to determine a plan. Voice and "brain game" groups are beneficial, but only a speech pathologist can provide the skill and detail required to fully address the complexity of the disease process. What should you look for in a speech therapist?

*A speech pathologist with additional education and knowledge regarding neurological disorders

*Availability for the business to provide you with the same speech therapist consistently across sessions

*A speech pathologist who understands the importance of interdisciplinary care and provides a whole person approach

*A setting that is right for you (home health, outpatient, private pay, acute care, respite care, or donation based)

*An energetic and positive speech pathologist who focuses on functional goals to promote quality of life and success outside of speech therapy sessions.

There are plenty of wonderful speech pathologists in the greater Cincinnati area! Keep trying if the first one doesn't feel right. Just like doctors (and life in general), one size doesn't fit all!

As you can see, I could talk for quite a while on the subject, so please reach out to myself or a speech therapist to learn more than the basics discussed.
