July PD-EDU: What is Balance?

Free VIRTUAL PD EDU

July 18 from 11:00am- Noon

“What Is Balance?” will provide a comprehensive overview of balance, fall prevention, and balance-focused exercise, with special attention to individuals with Parkinson's Disease. We will discuss that balance is not a single skill, but rather the result of multiple body systems working together, including the visual, vestibular (inner ear), proprioceptive (body awareness), nervous, and muscular systems. We will also discuss how posture, particularly the stooped posture often seen in Parkinson's disease, can negatively affect balance and increase fall risk.

We will focus on the four key components of balance and the "Six Pack of Balance,” the six muscle groups that are particularly important for maintaining stability and the exercises to strengthen these muscles.
