Parkinson’s-specific exercise is very important in the treatment of this disorder, and one clinic in our area that works hard to provide opportunities for such exercise is Kettering Health’s NeuroRehab and Balance Center. Located in Centerville, just outside Dayton, the NR&BC offers classes of varying intensity (medium, high and mixed) each twice a week. Each class is led by certified physical therapists who have extensive training in PD-specific treatments. Training includes Parkinson Wellness Recovery and Rock Steady Boxing (so far the only 2 Parkinson Foundation approved training courses represented in our area) as well as LSVT BIG and other continuing education courses. Tyler McLean, one of NR&BC’s physical therapists, says that one of the strengths of the program is its combination of many approaches – PWR, LSVT BIG, boxing, yoga, balance, resistance training, aerobic training, dual tasking and postural awareness – in order to target all aspects of Parkinson’s.
Class participants testify to the benefits of the NeuroRehab & Balance program. Mark Tatarzycki, who was diagnosed a year ago, says the classes are a godsend; he says they are fun, energetic, varied and challenging. Mark finds the PTs very knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile for the patients. Joe Lite joined an NR&BC class in June (after some initial resistance!) and says he feels better mentally knowing he is doing what he can to improve physically. He is grateful to be able to do so with other people sharing the same struggles. Keith Miller says that the benefits from these classes are both physical and social. Keith believes it has helped slow the progression of his PD, and his wife sees a noticeable improvement. He also says, ”It is nice talking with people who understand, and can relate to, what I'm experiencing with Parkinson's.” Keith finds the instructors “very personable, supportive and encouraging.”
